FAFSA Is Open. Here's the Order to Do Things.

After last year's rollout, families are wary. The form works now — here's how to get through it in one sitting, what the CSS Profile adds, and the Pennsylvania deadline that bites.

Last year’s FAFSA was a mess — a late launch, broken logins, corrections that took months. If that soured you on the whole thing, I understand. This year the form is open, it works, and the sooner you finish it the sooner you’ll know what college actually costs your family.

Before you start

  1. Everyone needs an FSA ID. Student and each contributing parent, created separately at studentaid.gov. Do this a few days before you sit down — verification can take a day.
  2. Have last year’s tax return nearby. The form pulls most figures from the IRS automatically with your consent, but you’ll want to sanity-check them.
  3. Know who the “contributor” is. For divorced or separated parents, it’s the parent who provided more financial support in the last 12 months — not necessarily the one the student lives with. This changed in the new form and it trips up a lot of families.

The sitting

Set aside an hour. The student starts the form and invites the parent contributor by email; the parent completes their section with their own FSA ID. Consent to the IRS data transfer. List every college your student might apply to — there’s no penalty for listing a school you later drop, and adding one later means a correction.

Submit. Then wait for the confirmation email with your Student Aid Index. That number is the starting point for every aid offer.

The CSS Profile

About 200 colleges, mostly private, also require the CSS Profile from the College Board. It asks more — home equity, business income, the other parent’s finances. It’s the form that determines institutional aid at those schools, which is often the larger pile of money. Check each college’s financial aid page for whether it’s required and by when; many early-application schools wanted it in November.

The Pennsylvania deadline

PHEAA’s state grant has its own FAFSA deadline, and for most students it’s May 1 of senior year. That sounds far away. It isn’t, because the family that puts the FAFSA off “until we hear back” is the family that misses it. File it this month.

What you’ll learn

Within a few weeks, colleges start building aid offers from these numbers. When they arrive, you’ll compare them in real dollars — net cost after grants, not the sticker price and not the “total aid” that counts loans as help. That’s a post for March. For now: FSA IDs, one sitting, submit.
